Bedbugs are nasty small parasites that feed on human and animal blood. So long as there’s an adequate supply of hosts, they will continue to grow into an infestation. Bugs and pests thrive in places such as mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards and carpets. They hide and seek cracks and crevices on walls, floors and even furniture coming out at night crawling rapidly readyfor their bite. It may lead to skin lesions and allergic reactions with bedbugs injecting their saliva into the skin.
Though not associated with transmission of diseases, bedbugs are still downright annoying. They can affect your reputation as a homeowner or a business owner. Some cases would even go as far as closing down a business. Once an infestation occurs, it will spread rapidly especially in connecting units such as apartments, hotels, and condominiums. Angry customers and poor reviews will spread just as quickly causing damage to the business.
Early and proactive detection is the key to controlling bedbugs successfully. But if the infestation has gone out of control, working with a licensed pest control company is crucial. Getting rid of them is not very easy. Oftentimes, it will require multiple sessions and treatments in order to effectively halt the astounding reproduction rate of bedbugs.
There are many ways to remediate an infestation which may include physical, chemical and non-chemical controls. The use of pesticides is common but not always effective and may even result to possible health risks. It requires multiple visits and there’s a possibility for bedbugs to develop chemical resistance. If this happens, the infestation will only continue to proliferate and worst, it will disperse in neighboring units.
Considering that treatments are targeted for sleeping areas, the need for a less invasive approach has gave way to other methods of controlling bedbugs. Physical isolation has been tried involving zippered bed bug-proof mattress covers and other barriers. Inorganic materials such as diatomaceous earth may be effective but it only applies in a dry environment. There are also claims that essential oils can kill bed bugs but it is yet to be proven.
Other non-chemical methods with regard to controlling bedbugs involve heat. This type of treatment has been widely used and touted as quite effective with high temperatures killing bedbugs. Clothes dryers can be used to treat beddings and clothing using the combination of laundry detergent and hot water. Infested clothes are then subjected to high temperature in the dryer for at least 20 minutes. Steam treatment has also proven to kill all stages of bedbugs but the process is tedious and requires multiple sessions. Steamingof mattresses and other infested furniture and crevices needs be done thoroughly to ensure that the bugs are completely eliminated. Cold treatment is another efficient and inexpensive method of control. Since bedbugs are highly sensitive to temperature, subjecting them to cold air will eventually decrease their population.
Depending on the degree of the infestation and the environment, NIMBY Pest Management will carry out a method of treatment that will produce the most favorable results based, of course, on thorough onsite assessment and analysis.
