NIMBY Wildlife , Pest Control and Environmental Solutions has been dealing with raccoon problems for many years serving numerous household and properties across Southern Ontario. Our wildlife technicians have been trained for all levels of raccoon control specializing in various live trapping techniques without killing them in the process. We understand too that often times a mother raccoon will have babies and nest in a homeowners attic causing damage and health concerns (through feces). If you are encountering “baby raccoons in my attic” then give us a call!
While some methods may kill or maim raccoons leading to immense stress and animal injuries NIMBY strives to use trapping and relocation of raccoons. Having said this, getting rid of raccoons is not as simple as trapping or excluding them from the property. In order to get it right, you will need to understand how they eat, breed and live. Only then will you effectively eliminate these pests from causing more damages to your property and health.
Some of the primary approaches used to control raccoons include trapping, repellents, exclusion and habitat modification among others. But before evicting raccoons from your house, wildlife management companies need to scope out the property and understand how they got inside in the first place. The goal is to establish their point entry and thoroughly inspect if the area is currently active with baby raccoons.
One way to determine if raccoons are using your attic as a den is to block the holes with wadded newspaper but loosely. If it moved for the next couple of days, it could only mean that you have wildlife renters in the house.
Trapping is a common option for wildlife removal but not always effective if done wrong. For instance, trapping mother raccoons out from the house with young baby raccoons in the attic will only lead to more problems. Most often than not, the young raccoons will eventually die but not before you suffer from further house damage and irritating baby noises at night. A successful trapping method should be employed by a professional to ensure that the young ones will not be isolated from their mothers. Usually, the process will just subtly force the mothers to relocate their babies to another den.
Professionals at NIMBYalso make use of the one-way door trap but timing is crucial for this removal method to be successful. The young raccoons should be mobile by this time and they are led out of the house by manipulating their entry points. As soon as they are out, the holes and crawl spaces are secure and closed for good so that mother and baby raccoons cannot re-enter your attic.
One other control method widely used and practiced in Ontario is home modification. Considering that raccoons are smart and talented, they will survive any setting so long as the food supply is plentiful. What homeowners can do is make sure that the trash bins are tightly closed and no food should be left outside and unattended.
But whenever possible, raccoon exclusion is probably the best method to cope with wildlife problems. This is when exclusion devices are used for the chimneys, in the attic and in other areas of the house where raccoons can easily get in and get out. Installation of screening vents and closing of entry holes is not only efficient but it will ensure that raccoons have no way to re-infest the property.
